The world's first high resolution

magnetic encoder has arrived

     

 

 

Motor Technology has launched the world's first high resolution, magnetic, absolute encoder that combines the precision and accuracy of optical technology with the robustness of magnetic, all-metal construction. Designed and manufactured by Lenord + Bauer, of Germany, the new GEL 235 is a genuine innovation based on an entirely new type of contour disk made of ferromagnetic steel.

Etched into the steel disk using optical lithography and chemical etching processes are three incremental tracks with stepped numbers of ridges. The tracks are scanned magnetically using giant magneto-resistive sensor elements and the absolute position is determined by ingeniously applying a Vernier scale to the readings. In such a way the new encoder is accurate to 0.1 of a degree and has an overall resolution of 28 bits (16 bit single turn and 12 bit multi-turn).

Its use of a magnetic measuring principle means that the new GEL 235 absolute encoder is immune to ageing effects. The result is longer and more reliable system operation, which is particularly beneficial on remote or inaccessible applications. The encoder is not affected by wide fluctuations of temperatures and humidity, and its immunity to condensation makes it suitable for long-term use in areas with greatly varying ambient temperatures.

The ferromagnetic steel contour disk is form fixed to the encoder shaft resulting in a highly robust unit. Unlike optical systems that use transparent glass or plastic code discs it is practically impervious to dirt or vibration.

The new GEL 235 absolute encoder is available as a single-turn or multi-turn variant with SSI interface and additional sine/cosine signal. The fieldbus profiles PROFIBUS-DP and CANopen are available via a plug-on bus adaptor. The standard flange diameter is 58mm, and the housing length for both single-turn and multi-turn variants is just 46mm and only 30 mm longer with bus cap.

Clamping or synchro flanges and a semi-hollow shaft with cable or plug outlet are also available.
