A multifunctional new process controller that provides motion control and programmable logic control (PLC) in a single unit has been launched in the UK by Motor Technology of Stockport. The new MotionPLC from Lenord + Bauer also comes with an attractive and functional control panel with an LCD display and keypad. The all-in-one controller takes the headache out of selecting the motion controller, PLC and control panel as separate units, which in todayís world of different communication protocols, programming environments and technologies can be a real nightmare.

The simple-to-operate, multifunctional MotionPLC takes care of everything. The controllerís standard CoDeSys IEC 61131-3 programming environment enables programming in any one of six different languages including: Structured Text (ST), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Ladder Diagram (LD), Instruction List (IL), Sequential Function Chart (SFC), and Continuous Function Chart (CFC), so engineers can program in whatever language they prefer. Whatís more, different languages may be used for different functions. For instance, PLC functions could be programmed in Ladder Diagram while motion control functions could be programmed in Structured Text.

The MotionPLC has an interface port which enables it to operate with the industry proven AnyBus modules, encompassing major field bus systems such as DeviceNet, Profibus DP, Interbus S and Ethernet. A further benefit is that the AnyBus modules can be retrofitted or replaced at any time without the need to modify the PLC programme.

The standard controller can be used to operate AC and DC drives, hydraulic and pneumatic units as well as servo and stepper drives. Furthermore it can use positional information from both incremental and absolute encoders and features analogue and digital inputs and outputs enabling the monitoring of temperature sensors (PT100), load cells, and other ancillary equipment. To provide additional expansion the controller features two CANbus interfaces that can be used to connect to CANbus based servo drives and Remote I/O.

The MotionPLC is a particularly robust product having been initially designed and tested for use in harsh environments such as wind turbines. It is suited for use in a wide range of applications including: packaging and warehousing systems; processing lines; and wood, plastic and metal working machinery etc.
